On July 22, 1999 in Burbank, CA, the U.S. Postal Service issued this sheet of James Cagney gummed 33¢ stamps - the 5th issuance in the Legends of Hollywood series. The stamp portrait of Cagney is by Thomas Blackshear of Colorado Springs, CO; and the photo to the right of the stamps shows Cagney in a scene from the 1942 film Yankee Doodle Dandy for which he received an Oscar for Best Actor. Also included on the stamp sheet is the following short biography: "James Cagney (1899-1986) is one of the screen's most memorable stars. This dynamic and versatile actor is particularly remembered for his portrayal of the quintessential tough guy and for his Oscar-winning performance as entertainer George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). He appeared in more than 60 films and received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, and the Medal of Freedom." Even though he was a classic tough guy on film, Cagney always considered himself nothing but a "song and dance man". He was also a founding member of the Screen Actor's Guild and was president of the Guild from 1942-44.
