Nicely done oil on canvas. Depicts a gnarled old tree with figures next to a placid lake or stream amidst a pleasant fall sunset. Frame measures 36 1/4" by 26 1/4" with a sight of approximately 29 1/2" by 19 1/2". Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentwood, Essex in 1868, the son of painter John Sherrin, R.I. (1819-1896). He studied under his father and became a pupil of B.W. Leader, the well known landscape artist and member of the "Williams" family. His earliest paintings depict sailing ships, while later he turned to landscapes. He often painted sunsets and autumn scenes and was influenced by the style of the later paintings of B.W. Leader. His paintings were often used for book illustrations and can be seen in a book titled "British Highways and Byways from a Motorcar", published in 1908 by Thomas D. Murphy. He was commissioned by King George V to paint Sandringham and this painting still hangs in Buckingham Palace. His son, Reginald Daniel Sherrin (1891-1971) was also an artist. Very nice antique condition with age related wear. Painting demonstrates some craquelure (see pics) most noticeable in the sky area. Canvas may also benefit from a light cleaning; Colors still appear vibrant. Small, old repair on the back of the canvas. Minor losses and craquelure to the gilt gesso frame. Overall, in very good condition considering age. Beautiful, detailed artwork by a well known artist that's ready to hang on your wall! additional information I am a private collector liquidating my entire collection of 8000 plus Paintings because of health reason. I will sell my paintings the same way I collected them for the past 50 years, by the value of their artistic quality workmanship and academic excellence. ...just trying to recoup a little before my Heirs sell them on a Yard sale.
