Description: This type of lathe-turned and hand carved, peg-jointed doll originated in Grödnertal, (also known as Val Gardena), a valley in the Italian Alps. So simple and affordable, its popularity grew throughout Europe and the United States where they were called Pennywoods. These dolls were sold undressed (as this one) and children enjoyed making their clothing from scraps of fabric. CONDITION: As shown, there's wear to the paint (mainly the black hair). All joints are without any damage and they operate smoothly.
