Description: Modern NatureDerek Jarman Description: Woodstock NY: The Overlook Press, 1994, Stated First American Edition. 314 pages, illustrated with 19 stark photographs of the garden, the Author's work, his health struggle and his circle of friends including of Tilda Swinton and Annie Lenox. This is the third of Jarman's memoirs (following "At Your Own Risk" and "Dancing Ledge" ) covering the years 1989 and 1990, during which he struggles to keep working despite his status as publicly HIV-positive, and he reflects on life, sensuality and the beauty of nature. “Jarman’s gifts, in prose as well as film, are spatial, visual, imagistic.” - The Sunday Times 'There's no book I love more than Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature' - Olivia Laing (The Guardian, April 2018) - "Wild, honest, riotous, the film-maker’s diary showed me what it meant to be an artist, to be political – and how to plant a garden." - "His capacity to write honestly about sex and death makes much contemporary nature writing seem prissy and anaemic" - "But wait! I don’t want to neglect the other Jarman, the mischief-maker, chatty and irrepressible as his neighbour’s thieving crow, flirting in Comptons bar in Soho, London, gossiping and plotting over cakes from Maison Bertaux. He steals cuttings from every plant he sees, fulminates against tabloid editors, the National Trust, ticket machines and Channel 4 commissioners, and concludes disarmingly by revelling in his own good fortune, his late-flowering joy." Condition: Fine throughout: clean, tight and bright in like, mylar-protected, dust jacket with crisp bright text throughout. Exquisite edition and beautifully illustrated with vintage photographs showcasing the iconoclastic and controversial filmmaker. Additional Information: Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman (1942 - 1994) was an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener, and author. Well known as a pioneering film maker, Jarman was also the author of several important books including Dancing Ledge, which details his life until the age 40, a collection of poetry: A Finger in the Fishes Mouth, two volumes of diaries: Modern Nature and Smiling In Slow Motion and two treatises on his work in film and art: The Last of England (also published as Kicking the Pricks) and Chroma. On 22 December 1986, Jarman was diagnosed as HIV positive and discussed his condition in public. His illness prompted him to move to Prospect Cottage, Dungeness in Kent, near the nuclear power station. In 1994, he died of an AIDS-related illness in London, aged 52. He is buried in the graveyard at St Clement's Church, Old Romney, Kent. A blue plaque commemorating Jarman was unveiled at Butler's Wharf in London on 19 February 2019, the 25th anniversary of his death. Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
