Description: Here is a shirt worn by American League umpire Dave Phillips during the 1994 Major League Baseball season. The MLB 125th Anniversary Patch on the left sleeve dates it to 1994. The light blue button-down shirt is manufactured by Hathaway and is marked as a size 16 1/2 SS (short sleeve). Manufacturer's tag in the collar. The American League round patch is sewed to the left breast pocket. Phillips' #7 is sewed to the right sleeve. Phillips wore #7 during his years in the American League and when MLB merged the two leagues' staffs in 2000, continued to wear #7 until retirement after the 2002 season. (Eric Gregg wore #7 for the National League but was one of the mass resignation group in 1999 and was not reinstated.) Dave Phillips was a MLB umpire for 32 seasons from 1971 to 2002. He had many notable moments during those years: He worked 3 ALDS, 6 ALCS (3 x crew chief), 4 World Series (2 x crew chief) and 2 All Star Games. He was the crew chief for the 1979 Disco Demolition game at Comiskey Park, and he ordered the White Sox to forfeit Game 2 of that night's doubleheader to the Detroit Tigers. He gave HOF pitcher Gaylor Perry the first ejection of his long career in 1982 for throwing an illegal pitch. He was the plate umpire for the July 15, 1994 Albert Belle 'corked bat' incident, removing the bat in question and having it put in the umpire's locker room to be examined later. The Indian's Jason Grimsley stole the bat out of the locker room and replaced it with one of teammate Paul Sorrento's bats. It fooled no one and Belle was suspended 7 games. I cannot swear that this shirt was worn for that game, but it is possible. Phillips also worked 6 no-hitters during his career, though none behind the plate. A nice piece of baseball history for collectors of umpire memorabilia. One of three I acquired several years ago; time to thin the collection. The other two will be going up soon, a 1997-99 National League light blue polo shirt #29 worn by Bill Hohn, and a scarce 1996 American League red polo shirt #29 worn and autographed by John Shulock.
