"There was," he said, "a lot of fear." The ensemble was created with 13 members in 1973; after the reduction in force, only its leader and reed players Light Henry Huff and Edward Wilkerson, Jr., were left. Said El'Zabar: "We didn't know of anyone who had done what we were attempting to do, and we had to hit some prestigious stages. Our first date as a trio was opposite, Dexter Gordon."
