Description: 1993 Bill of Rights 90% Silver Coin & Medal Set Year: 1993 Mint(s): West Point & Philadelphia Composition: 90% Silver & Bronze Diameter: 30.6 mm & 33.3 mm The Bill of Rights Commemorative Silver Half Dollar & The James Madison Presidential Medal This commemorative set honors James Madison, one of five men, who was selected to prepare the Constitution's final draft. The new Government, founded on the Constitution, went into effect with the assembly of the first Congress in March 1789. The States had ratified the Constitution with the understanding that a Bill of Rights would later be added as amendments. It was up to Madison who introduced those amendments during that first Congress and fought diligently for their passage. It wasn't until the end of 1791 that all 10 amendments were approved to be ratified into constitutional law. The Bill of Rights safeguards individual liberties and defies important freedoms. Thanks to James Madison we have the right of religion, speech, press, assembly, and trial by jury. Without these rights America wouldn't be the country it is today. His contributions didn't end with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Madison went on to serve as Secretary of State and our fourth President of the United States.
