1990 NBA Slam Dunk 3 Point Contest Ticket Stub Dominique Wilkins Auto Signed

Description: You are looking at a full ticket for the NBA's 1990 All-Star Saturday which took place on February 10, 1990 at the Miami Arena in Miami, Florida. That same "day" in another corner of the world (it was technically February 11 crossing the international dateline), there was this little itty bity championship boxing match that upended the heavyweight division forever. And in a third corner of the world, "Free Nelson Mandela" became more than just a warranted cry for long-awaited justice and evolving trendy slogan, but a reality. What a day that was. First things first - there are no (0) full tickets to this All Star Saturday in the PSA pop report based on my last search. That does not mean they do not exist, but no one has submitted any to PSA to date. I would guess within the last few years of the ticket collecting hobby finding so many new adherents we would have seen some graded already. Five years after winning the Slam Dunk Contest for the first time, 'Nique finally earned his second crown. Nowadays, this event is just as notable for a shortcoming, namely, Michael Jordan tying an all-time event low of 5 points in the Three-Point Contest. Here is the AP account of 1990 All-Star Saturday featuring some extra salty perhaps unwarranted knocking to Jordan's performance: "Michael Jordan should've stuck to dunking. Dominique Wilkins did, and he joined Jordan as the only two-time winner of the NBA slam-dunk contest. Jordan switched to the 3-point shooting contest on All-Star Saturday and matched the lowest-scoring round in the five-year history of the event with five points. Jordan's teammate, two-time finalist Craig Hodges of the Chicago Bulls, won the 3-point contest after three-time winner Larry Bird also was eliminated in the first round. "It was good for me to get out and feel that type of competition," said Jordan, the dunk champion in 1987-88. "It's different from dunking. I'd like to come back and try it again. If you don't do well, you want to come back and do better." Wilkins, who won the slam-dunk title in 1985, outpointed surprise finalist Kenny Smith, 146.8 to 145.1 in the final round. Smith was the more creative dunker, with several off-the-floor, off-the-glass slams, but he couldn't overcome the power of Wilkins, who at 6-foot-8, is five inches taller. "We were both using our creativity out there," Wilkins said. "People don't realize the degree of difficulty. There's only so many dunks you can do." Smith received 49.8 points for his second of three dunks in the final round. Smith bounced the ball off the floor and the backboard before reverse dunking. Wilkins, who was going to skip the contest this year until injuries to other entrants allowed him to change his mind, was only .3 behind after scoring a 49.7 with a soaring one-hander. In the final round, Smith tossed the ball high in the air but lost control before softly dunking it through the net. If he had missed completely, he would've had another chance to try his final dunk. "It's the only time you get penalized for doing well," Smith said. "I slipped on the takeoff. I had to grab the rim. Unfortunately, it went in." Wilkins' two-handed dunk in the final round earned 49.2 points, more than enough to pass Smith. Hodges had 19 points and Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers 18 in the 3-point final shootout after Hodges outpointed Jon Sundvold of Miami 9-7 in a 24-second shootout after they tied in the semifinals. Hodges, who set a record for a single round in the contest with 25 points in the first round in 1986, lost in the finals to Bird in 1986 and Dale Ellis last year. Hodges said the music that plays during the event made it difficult to concentrate. "The music shocks you when you first start shooting," said Hodges, the NBA 3-point percentage leader at .477. "My son asked me to get the 3-point trophy after seeing Larry Bird win it, but I told him it wasn't going to be that easy." Bird, who won the contest in 1986, 1987 and 1988 before missing last year with an injury, had 14 points in the first round and failed to make the semifinals, finishing behind Hodges' 20, Miller's 16 and 15 each by Sundvold and Bob Hansen of Utah. "I feel like I went to Las Vegas and lost $20,000," said Bird, who failed to shoot the 25 balls allotted for one minute. "I couldn't believe I didn't get off all the shots," Bird said. "When the horn went off, and I had balls left, I couldn't believe it. I've never had trouble getting off all the shots before." Jordan had five points in the first round, matching the worst round by any player. Detlef Schrempf had five in the 1988 semifinals. In the Legends Game, Cazzie Russell, who played 12 seasons with the New York Knicks, Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago, hit a baseline jumper with 17 seconds left, giving the East a 37-36 lead that held up when Dave Cowens missed for the West in the final seconds. "I was supposed to pick and roll, but I don't know what happened to the roll," Russell said. "I just spotted up and hit a baseline jumper." Russell said that since he is an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, "I can't afford to have a big stomach. I did some running for the game to prevent pulled muscles. You don't want to be embarrassed out there. We have some pride in how we look." " I can only guess Jordan worked on his 3-pointer until he found some redemption in Game 1 of the Finals against the Blazers in 1992 - though Jordan's hot shooting in the first half has been blamed on a second poor performance by Jordan in a card game the night before. I had Wilkins sign and inscribe the ticket at a private signing a couple of years ago. Craig Hodges does signings, and for whatever reason I have just missed the last couple of events. When he does another I will add him to the ticket. Please take a look at the scans for condition. I have been a long time ticket collector and will be posting many additional tickets in the coming weeks. The item you see pictured is the actual item you will receive. Feel free to email me with any questions. I will ship for free anywhere in the United States.
