Description: This 1987 copy of Soun Tetoken: Nez Perce Boy is signed by author Ken Thomasma but unfortunately the cover has become almost completely detached from the spine of the book. The damages to this book have been pictured and it is priced to reflect them. I hope that the author signature can still bring value to someone! Also, as you can see in the pictures, the last page appears to end abruptly as if pages are missing, however the story ends at the end of that page so no story material is missing and I cannot be sure whether there were any pages missing or if it was just a publishing choice to save costs. The inner cover has been signed in black ink, seemingly in two different pens:"Tats -la-hain(Best Wishes)Ken Thomasma" The back story description reads:"An exciting story for children ages 9 - 13. With unusual sensitivity and clearly evident love for Indian lore and legend, Ken Thomasma vividly recounts the days of the Nez Perce tribe before and during the War of 1877 and surrounding battles. The chief character is Soun Tetoken (Silent One), an orphan who is adopted by the son of Chief Joseph. The young child witnesses the birth of his colt and then trains him, using only hand signals. Boy and horse are inseparable. When Soun Tetoken undergoes his Wyakin (the ritual meditation period prior to becoming a man), a dramatic event occurs that changes his life and results in the arrival of a coyote pup who shares his adventures from that day on. The growing tension between the Nez Perce and the white man is skillfully recounted. So is the freedom flight down the Bitterroot Valley and the Big Hole Battle. The surrender of Chief Joseph and his unforgettable words, "From where the sun now stands I shall fight no more forever" is dramatically recorded. Ken Thomasma walked through the battlegrounds and spent hours with Vernon Waters, old Chief Joseph's great-great-grandson, to authenticate the details of this story. No wonder the daily life of the Nez Perce and their rich cultural heritage are so realistically depicted." With illustrations by Eunice Hundley, the cover says she: "...is a free-lance portrait artist who lives in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. She specializes in sensitive portrayals of Indian and Mexican people."
