Description: In 1976, the Paris Mint struck 500 Libertas Americana medals, with the July 4, 1976 date in silver. The mintage was very small and the medals today are highly desired. Interestingly, before the mint struck the 500 medals in silver, they tested the dies on bronze planchets. This is one of those 5 medals! And as can be clearly seen, the surfaces are semi-proof like, and the design is not fully struck up - further evidence of this being a test strike. The piece may appear to have hairlines, but those are die polish lines that were on the die itself and transferred to the medal during striking. The medal did not receiving the finishing that the silver medals have, so it does not have the sandblasted, antiqued finish. The Libertas Americana design is one of the most emblematic and symbolic within US medallic history. The design has been used many times since 1976 by the Paris Mint in different sizes and metals. Of all of the various types, this is one of the rarest, and in my opinion, one of the most eye appealing versions. It looks like gold! This is a pop 1 with 1 higher. It has a PCGS Trueview and it is pictured in this listing. Only 3 have been graded by PCGS, and if these medals were made from least well-struck to best-struck, this example may be the earliest known and possibly the first struck with the 1976 dies. 76mm in diameter.Bronze (listed as Brass by PCGS on the label).Augustin Dupre.Paris Mint.
