This volume includes the essay Norman Lindsay: his inspiration and technique, by his brother, Lionel Lindsay. Pen drawing was peculiarly an art form of the nineteenth century, risen from the decline of engraving. Norman, born in 1879, was, to quote Lionel Lindsay, In essence ... an illustrator, a man of ideas and strong beliefs; an untranscendental visionary, the figments of whose imagination wear in his art the very garb of reality. He is, in all probability, the first great exponent of Romanticism with the pen. Rubens was to be the most lasting and significant influence on Lindsay's art. All the great pen drawings emanate from this influence, the rhythm of composition, the profound pleasure in healthy nudity. Yet when you look at them you never think of Rubens for a moment, you think of Norman Lindsay. For he has assimilated his influences and coloured them with his personality.'
