The obverse of each of the 1973 coins bears the official portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and the words "Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands". Four of the coins are silver. The five-dollar coin is of the largest and heaviest sterling silver coins (.925 fine). The two-dollar coin, is also minted in solid sterling silver. The one-dollar and the fifty-cent coins are of .800 fine silver. The five remaining coins each carry intricate designs.
