This is an original press photo. President's Jest: Washington: Senator Wayne Morse, D-OR, gets a kick out of the personally inscribed color photograph President Johnson gave him at the White House July 18th. The President had just appointed Morse to head a special mediation board to find a permanent solution to the rail dispute. The inscription reads: "For Wayne--Now who will be chairman--who draws the black bean--LBJ." This is an apparent reference to the 19th century Mexican War in which United States prisoners who drew black beans from a jar were executed. Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 07-18-1967.
