Description: Zen and Zen Classics Volume Five - Twenty-five Zen Essaysby R. H. Blyth [i.e. Reginald Horace Blyth] The Hokuseido Press1966 Hardcover with dustjacket, 225pp. Many plates with descriptions printed on tissue guards. Jacket is sunned on the spine and top cover edge, with small closed tears to edges. Internally very good. Dustjacket incorrectly states "Twenty-four Essays", whereas title page states "Twenty-five Zen Essays". Volume five only. These essays cover Zen in relation to poetry, sex, Christianity and western society, humour, etc. Inner dustjacket states that this volume is part of a reduced series originally planned as ab 8-volume set, but curtailed due to the author's death in 1964. From the rear cover: "This 5th volume of the series on Zen is a step forward in the direction of a universal Zen, a Zen which will include Chinese and Japanese Zen, and not omit that of Christian and Islamic mysticism, of Dante, Eckhart, Wordsworth, and Thoreau. For this purpose it is especially necessary to distinguish, in both East and West, the Zen which is Zen, and the Zen which is only talking about Zen. Further, Zen must face boldly and answer clearly the objec- tions which are raised against its sometimes over- weening claims to omniscience and infallibility, not to say omnipotence, and these answers must not be Zen answers, but rational and logical ones. Zen means not doubting. This is true, no doubt, but we must doubt whether we are doubting; we must doubt whether Zen means not doubting. The greater the illusion the greater the enlightenment, the greater the doubt the greater the belief. The enlightenment of satori, the belief of conversion is said to be once for all, but this also may be doubted. Enlightenment is compatible with stupidity, superstition, cruelty, bad taste, a lack of humour, and many other unlovely things, and the same may be said of sudden conversion. This indubitable fact shows that Zen is not (yet) everything. Zen, which is growth, must itself grow." Overseas buyers please contact me first for P&P quote.
