Description: Julian Ritter's Clown painting, "MAESTRO"1962 - SIGNED in the plate, print This is a very unusual print I am offering as it has color scuff marks from the image throughout the margin, not unlike the artist's disdain for boundries of any kind. Born in 1909 Mr. Ritter was a very controversial artist to say the least. Fortunately for me I had the opportunity to meet Julian Ritter back in 1991 and discussed many of life's foibles. I remember asking him about the truth behind the clowns and he immediately smiled at me and paid me a compliment I shall not forget. "Finally, somebody besides me gets the many layers behind the smile of a clown." "He added that he often went over the line many times in his art and I told him I got it. When I was younger, very young, my grand parents traveled with the biggest circus in the world and I got to meet Emmot Kelly, the clown of clowns. Even then, as I small boy, I somehow saw the sadness or life images behind his makeup. Clowns are human too, and they have the same sadnesses we all have, only the makeup makes it go away. IN OUR MINDS, that is! The sadness especially showed in the artists work as the clowns never smiled when surrounded by his stunning nudes he was most famous for. But the makeup hid the sadness from our eyes. What the artist tried to capture was the honesty behind the smiles. The reality he juxtaposed from the beautiful women and the funny clowns seen in much of his art. What makes this print so special is the fact that this offering and "Micky" were painted in his commercially most successful years. Not his most successful in his personal life. One thing I knew from meeting him a time or two was that somehow he was always trying to find something that eluded him. Looking back now, I soooo hope he found it. I know he did quit painting clowns after the famous piece he finished called, " Clown Burial." He then went back to the beautiful women he posed many times. Somehow I got the sense that this was the only way he could be part of their world; except in a few circumstances where he "Blurred" the image and the reality. I am so honored to have gotten these at an estate sale of a man in Los Angeles who revered Julian Ritter's art. The funny thing is I can't find these two pieces anywhere, but I know he did not list everything he did artistically. Besides, these were minor works he was probably commissioned to do. Both prints display rolled up layers on them but that will all come out when mounted or framed. Both prints also have paint marks in the margins that I have decoded were definitely within the realm of theartist. On Maestro there is a minor tear on the right hand margin, but that is an easy fix.(See picture #6) The dimensions of both prints are 18"x23.5" and they were printed in 1962, so currently these prints are now fifty (50) years young. I think they are great additions to any collections, or collectors of the artist. I say they are VERY FINE, but as usual I ask you to look at the pictures and give the print your number.
