Between Jan. 11 and 18, fire fighters fought five extra alarm fires in sub-zero temperatures. One of the worst blazes was in Hack's furniture warehouse and store, 333 W. Juneau av. More than 145 firemen battled flames and smoke for five hours or more in numbing cold. In minutes water turned to ice providing further hazards. Freezing spray, cascading back after water hit the walls, felt like tiny needles in firemen's faces.
