KUWAIT - the small sheikdom between Iraq and Saud Arabia, on the Persian Gulf, to the surface no larger than 1/8 of Denmark - has often been at the centre of world interest lately. Not long ago fed you feel this scant on pearl fishing, boat building and trade. In the desert, fed Bedouin nomads with their flocks of goats dadelkärnor, who came by boat from Basra, drinking stale water, which was transported from Iraq on the camel's back. In a decade, Kuwait has become an extremely wealthy oil state. Now edged modern American lyxåk the streets, imports of Diormodeller and all the luxuries is great. But wealth is not the common man; primarily the sheikhs - Abdullah Al Salim in the lead - which absorb billion revenue. Something, however, the subjects passed in the form of schools, hospitals, free medical, mosques, and last but not least, increased job opportunities. But it has not nearly reached "grow into" the new culture in this country where women still go deep veiled and the man usually does not see his descendants to face until the wedding night. - In Barbro Karabudas captivating book, we will experience an Arabian Nights-kingdom in the atomic age, a secretive world of the well is dirty, grey and primitive, to partly lit by gold, pearls and diamonds. From Book ... ALLAH IS THE CULPRIT It is not the airline's fault nor ours to the rain on that particular day, so that the small twin-engine plane can not leave Basra to Kuwait. "It is God's counsel," said the official, when I think that the airline could pay the unexpected drive. "Allah, He pays enough again - in Kuwait. In Kuwait, yes!" So he gives up a guffaw. "I have heard of crazy young people before who had gone there to fish for pearls. Yes, God gives enough again!" He laughs. "Do not talk nonsense," said my Christian neighbour from Tripoli. "Enough could well they where explosive wealthy sheikhs of Kuwait to keep the airport in order, but God will have to send angels from heaven with pick and shovel." We share finally a taxi for 14 Dinars with three middle-aged men and leave Basra's 45 million date palms for a half-day trip by a hot and virtually covered by vegetation, desert. The low "arfaj" -buskarna are the only plants here and was sticking out of the pale sandy soil. Iraq and Kuwait have not had to allocate a penny for road building through the desert, where they only follow their own intuition or tracks of a camel caravan had the same path. The driver points out, however, that the caravan tracks we follow are not honest, because they are not customs and passport control. We turn then to the west and shaking on through the monotonous landscape. Contents ...
