It served most of the Northeast and large portions of the Mid-west, with tracks also into Canada. States in the NYC system include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, Michigan, Missouri, and Massachusetts; it also ran into the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Its primary routes were to connect New York City with Boston in the east and with Chicago and St. Louis in the west, but it also had trackage to other major cities including Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. The NYC competed directly with the Pennsylvania Railroad in many markets, and other smaller lines also provided stiff competition. After World War II, the NYC began to see costs increase and revenues decline, caused in some part by its commuter services in the Northeast and labor costs. In an effort to survive, the NYC merged in 1968 with the Pennsylvania Railroad to form the Penn Central; this did not solve financial and operating problems, and in 1976 the Penn Central and other eastern lines were taken into the government-owned Conrail system. Conrail was broken up in 1998, and the NYC's surviving trackage is now mostly owned and operated by Norfolk Southern and CSX. For auction is a passenger train timetable dated April 28, 1957. It contains listings for all trains operated by the NYC, both local runs and express "named" trains. Listings are by train number, with arrival/departure times for stations served. The NYC operated such famous trains as the Twetieth Century Limited, the Lake Shore Limited, the Knickerbocker, the Commodore Vanderbilt, and the Wolverine. Equipment manifests are provided for the major runs. Timetables are included for the following groups of cities: (a) Chicago-Detoirt-Toledo-Cleveland-Toronto-Hamilton-Buffalo-Albany-New York-Boston; (b) Cincinnati-Dayton-Columbus-Cleveland-Buffalo-Boston-New York; (c) St. Louis-Indianapolis-Cleveland-Buffalo-Boston-New York; (d) St. Louis-Chicago-Indianapolis-Washington-Norfolk; (e) Chicago-Richmond-Norfolk; (f) Chicago-Elkhart-Toledo-Cleveland-Buffalo; (g) Chicago-Detroit-Niagara Falls-Buffalo; (h) Niagara Falls-Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse-Utica-Albany-New York; (i) Albany-Pittsfield-Springfield-Worcester-Boston; (j) Boston-Worcester-New York; (k) St. Louis-Indianapolis-Toledo-Detroit; (l) Cincinnati-Terre Haute-St. Louis; (m) Peoria-Indianapolis; (n) Cincinnati-Dayton-Columbus-Cleveland; (o) Cincinnati-Indianapolis-Chicago; (p) Detroit-Toledo-Cleveland; (q) Chicago-Toronto-Montreal-Quebec; (r) Detroit-Saginaw-Bay City-Mackinaw City; Rochester-Philadelphia-Washignton; (s) Buffalo-Hamilton-Toronto; more. This publication contains a list of stations, fares for coach and Pullman services, and a great 2-page map showing NYC lines and trackage operated by other railroads. There are also illustrations of various sleeping accommodations. The timetable measures appx 9x4 inches closed, 9x8 inches opened, and contains 48 pages; it is printed on medium-weight paperstock. For something now over 60 years old, it is in very good condition. There are no markings or writing; no rips or tears; and the binding is secure. A nice collectible for the NYC railfan. Images sell!
