Topps designed this issue to feature bright colors with a centralized image and a smaller likeness of the player in action. Hank Aaron’s rise to fame had all the makings of a Disney movie. In 1951, he signed a contract to play for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. The Howe Sports Bureau credits Aaron with a .366 batting average in 26 official Negro league games, with five home runs and 33 RBI. Due to his impressive play, the Boston Braves purchased Aaron's contract from the Clowns for $10,000. Over the course of the next few years, Aaron shuffled between the franchise's farm teams until March 13, 1954, when Milwaukee Braves left fielder Bobby Thompson fractured his ankle while sliding into second base during a spring training game. The mishap resulted in Aaron signing a major league contract. On April 23, 1954, Hammerin’ Hank began his historic march toward breaking Babe Ruth's career home run record by launching a fastball into the seats. Throughout his impressive 23 seasons, Aaron endured racist death threats and ostracization, much like his idol, Jackie Robinson. Despite these challenges, he walloped 755 career home runs, which broke the most heralded record in sports.
