THE TALKS WERE PRESENTED IN OCTOBER 1952 AT THE SOUTHWESTERN REGIONAL MEETING. THE MAIN SPEAKER WAS ROBERT L. LIGHTEN, PROJECT ENGINEER FOR BELL AIRCRAFT. HERE IS A LITTLE INFO ON HIM: Lichten was considered one of the world's outstanding engineers in the field of rotary-wing aeronautics. In 1959 of the Society's highest engineering honor, the Klemin Award was presented to him for his role in the development of Bell's XV-3 convertiplane. He was responsible for the design of all initial development versions of the military UH-1 (Huey) and of the light turbine JetRanger helicopters of Bell. Lichten's responsibilities at Bell included preliminary design, R&D, aerodynamics, dynamics, engineering, computing, reliability, and experimental aircraft projects. He joined Bell Aircraft Corp. (now Bell Aerospace Co.) in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1948, then went to Texas with Bell Helicopter in 1952. Lichten held many positions in AHS aside from the presidency. In a one-year period beginning in late in 1956, he served as editor of the then-new Journal of the American Helicopter Society. He also served a term as secretary-treasurer of the Society. Robert died on Sept. 18, 1971, a few hours after an automobile accident south of Waco, Texas, at age 50. THERE IS AN AWARD GIVEN EACH YEAR IN HIS HONOR. THE SECOND SPEAKER WAS FRANK M.
