"Lena Execution", artist Alexander Moravov April 17, 1912 is one of the bloody pages in the history of the Russian labor movement. On this day, at the mines of the Lena Gold Mining Partnership near the city of Bodaibo on a tributary of the Lena, government troops shot striking workers. According to various estimates, the Lena massacre claimed the lives of from 100 to 270 people, and another 250 to 500 were injured. It is believed that the reason for the strike was the rotten meat that the workers of the Andreevsky gold mine received for food. Hard work (the working day could last up to 16 hours), poor food, uninhabitable barracks, arbitrariness of the mine administration - all this led to a strike in March 1912, in which up to six thousand workers took part. They demanded improved living conditions, higher wages and shorter working hours. On April 17, more than two thousand workers marched to protest against the arrest of members of the strike committee. But the peaceful action ended tragically - on the orders of the gendarme captain Nikolai Treshchenkov, the soldiers opened fire on the workers. The event caused a huge resonance. The public commission under the State Duma to investigate this crime was headed by Alexander Kerensky, and for him this case became the beginning of political fame. Treshchenko was removed from service, the investigation into his case ended in 1914 - the captain was demoted to soldier.
