Description: 1945 Greenland American Issue OVERPRINT SET "PROOF OF OVERPRINT" . The overprint DANMARK BEFRIET 5 MAJ 1945" was printed on slip sheets / onion skin paper by the printers Commercial Stationery Company of New York. The overprint was to be placed on some 700 sets of the original American Issue of 1945 to celebrate the liberation of Denmark from Germany. These 700 sets were all that were left over from the original set that were printed by American Bank Note Company for the Danish Legation in New York. These were sent over to Commercial Stationery Company. These slip sheets may have been accidently printed on as they most likely would have been placed between the sheets of stamps and may not have been removed in the printing process. Or they were used to show the overprint as a "proof" of printing.Eric Wowern in his 1971 catalog said "known with the surcharge on tissue paper (silky paper) used as intermediate layer paper, instead of the stamp". Only 100 copies of these slip sheet impressions are known. The 1 and 7 ore lower values had the smaller ovpt in red on the slip sheets. No 5 ore value known. The 1 kroner and 2 kroner have the larger ovpt used but in a blue color. No other values known to exist.4 slip sheet overprints (retail $150 to $200 each) = $600 to $800+ 4 stamps. (all NH but 1 ore with faint pencil mark - catalog $525.00)
