Construction began around 1848 and proceeded slowly. Most of the work was done by slaves, and at one time the Southwestern was the third largest slave owner in Georgia. By 1852, the rails had been laid from Macon only as far as the Flint River at Oglethorpe. The next year the line was extended to Americus, aided by an investment by Americus citizens. In 1857, the Southwestern purchased the line between Americus and Albany then under construction by the Georgia & Florida Railroad (G&F) and pushed it to completion. The G&F was consolidated into the Southwestern in late 1859. In 1869, the Southwestern was leased to the Central of Georgia Railroad (CofGa). The CofGa continued to expand the Southwestern over the years and ultimately acquired a majority of Southwestern's stock in 1954. The CofGa was acquired by Southern Railway in the 1960s. Surviving Southwestern trackage is now primarily owned and operated by Norfolk Southern. For auction is a common stock certificate from the Southwestern for 10 shares; it is dated August 3, 1944, The vignette shows a reclining woman. The certificate measures appx 10x8 inches and is printed on typical stock paperstock. It is in very good condition. All writing/markings are from its issuance and cancellation. It has no rips or tears. The certificate bears the customary cancellation slits. A nice item for the Southwestern, Central of Georgia or Southern railfan.
