In a surprising coup for such a specialist company, in September 1934, it ended up successfully negotiating with the emerging French designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, to be the sole American manufacturer of her new perfume and cosmetic line. Stanco, of course, would have sole distribution rights.Surviving examples of Daggett & Ramsdell vanity cases are hard to find and indeed those that are found are not particularly remarkable either in terms of decoration or design. Perhaps from the company perspective what was more important was what the cases contained, believing that this would sell their product rather than the fancy exterior. They were probably right. A Little History The Daggett and Ramsdell company of New York, NY were early 1900's chemists who created products that made pretty ladies even prettier. Their early Beauty Creams were called "PERFECT" TM. In 1936 a designer called Theodore Sundin created a compact for the Sagamor Metal Goods company that supplied the Daggett & Ramsdell with this utilitarian rather than decorative Compact. These compacts which contained loose powder & rouge are now rare and hard to find in any condition. If you collect compacts, this early Daggett and Ramsdell one is for you 💋 See photos & Read Above to Decide Please I combine shipping just ask Please** I have over 1,000 Vanity Items Listed & 1,000s more to go Follow Me as the Items Unfold I live in Daytona Beach Shores Florida Average Age is 65 it’s Fondly Called Gods Waiting Room Tons More to List a Million More to Fin& Explore Great Vanity items for the Collector or for Period Era Movie Prop 💋 So Keep Watch who knows what I Have ! A Little History Below Unlike many cosmetics companies that suffered badly during the Great Depression, the Daggett & Ramsdell brand seemed to have weathered the poor economic climate well. In a surprising coup for such a specialist company, in September 1934, it ended up successfully negotiating with the emerging French designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, to be the sole American manufacturer of her new perfume and cosmetic line. Stanco, of course, would have sole distribution rights. Surviving examples of Daggett & Ramsdell vanity cases are hard to find and indeed those that are found are not particularly remarkable either in terms of decoration or design. Perhaps from the company perspective what was more important was what the cases contained, believing that this would sell their product rather than the fancy exterior. They were probably right. The Exception is the Design offered for Sale HereDaggett & Ramsdell kept their vanity cases utilitarianrather than decorative. What they contained and howthey worked were more important than how they looked. This loose powder and rouge vanity case was manufactured by Sagamor Metal Goods Company C1936Among the earliest traces of Daggett & Ramsdell vanity cases are a number of different styles sold in the 1930s. Laura Mueller, in her second volume, identifies aDraggett loose powder vanity case and in February 1936 the company released an ivory and chromium loose powder vanity case made by Sagamor Metal Goods Corporation. In January 1939 the company also released a more substantial double vanity case probably manufactured by The Scovill Manufacturing Company. In the first two examples the case designs are plain or non-existent although the double vanity case does have a more interesting design motif as does a later, 1941, offering of a pink enamel compact.During its first fifty years the company had not invested in creating a distinctive brand image. The quality of its products was enough as was the name Daggett & Ramsdell – which was often shortened to just D&R. Accordingly, the packaging used tended to be more utilitarian than decorative but in 1939 this would change. On the eve of the company’s fiftieth anniversary, a major redesign of its products was undertaken. The company commissioned packaging designer Everett W King to emphasize, through design and feminine colours, the fact that for half a century American women had been served by Daggett & Ramsdell. King created the image of the ‘Gay Nineties’ woman to mark the spirit of the company’s first year and the colours used were a range of soft pastel shades. The advertising tag line for the new packaging was ‘Daggett & Ramsdell. Perfect since 1890’. A major change in the Daggett & Ramsdell product range took place in 1933 when the company introduced a complete line of make-up. This consisted of: Perfect Face Powder in Naturelle, Naturelle No. 2, Rachel No. 2, Brunette and Brunette No. 2 shades; Perfect Lipstick in Light, Medium and Raspberry shades; Perfect Cream Rouge and Perfect Cake Rouge, also in Light, Medium and Raspberry shades; Perfect Eye Pencil in Brown and Black shades; and Perfect Eye Shadow in Blue-Gray and Brown shades. The make-up range also included: Protective Cream, a foundation; and Finishing Lotion, a liquid powder for the neck, shoulders and arms. Both of these products came in Naturelle, Rachel and Brunette No. 2 shades.Shades of Daggett & Ramsdell make-up were coordinated with a woman’s hair, skin and eye colour and the company provided shade suggestions for eight broad colour types: Light Blonde, Medium Blonde, Dark Blonde, Titian Blonde, Light Brunette, Medium Brunette, Titian Brunette, and Dark Brunette. 🔴 Specializing in ANTIQUE & VINTAGE VANITY ACCESSORIES & MORE 🔴 LITERALLY WHO KNOWS WHAT I HAVE !
