Description: Please check out the photos for the condition. Thanks for looking! DINA (whose name would sound like Dee-nah in English) and Betsy are two children of The Netherlands who live on the Island of Walcheren, one of the islands of the Province of Zeeland. Middelburg is the capital of the province. Many of the people on the island, especially in the small towns and villages, still wear beautiful costumes, as their ancestors have done for hundreds and hundreds of years. And since each place has its own kind of costume, you can easily tell where a person comes from by his dress. But all the children of Walcheren wear the same kind of cap. The farmers on the island are well-to-do people. They grow flax, and poppies (for the seeds) and wheat and fruit, particularly berries, and they raise cattle and sheep and pigs. Their homes are well built; their farms are prosperous; their cattle are sleek. The men come to market in suits of fine black broadcloth, trimmed with silver or gold buttons; the women's caps are of expensive Belgian lace, and their gold pins and their handsome coral necklaces are the finest that money can buy. They are intelligent and well-educated people, too; they take an interest in music and books, and maintain the little museum where some of Zeeland's treasures are gathered. Hundreds of years ago the men of Walcheren helped drive the Spanish from the seas, and secured the peace of The Netherlands, and their descendants today are the same fearless, independent, liberty-loving men and women. In fact, in spite of their difference in customs and costume, they are very much like Americans. And you Americans can pronounce their language as they do if you will turn to page 134, where you will find a list of Dutch words in the order of their appearance in the story. I am sure that you would like Dina and Betsy, their mother and father and friends, if you could meet them. And I hope you will feel that you have met them after you have read this book.
