1939 Arthur Wardle Dog Art Head Study Player Cigarette Trade Card OTTERHOUND

Description: RARE UK DOG ART CIGARETTE / TOBACCO / TRADE CARD, COLLECTIBLE, UK. Original, Printed in the 1939 by John Player & Sons, Dogs - a Series of 25 with paintings by Arthur Wardle, double head studies. These cards were never issued, and are extremely hard to find!! The set was due to be issued in 1939 but due to the Outbreak of War the cards did not make their way through to the packets as the British Government banned distribution, wanting to save the paper (yet, these were already printed!!). Each card is in very good plus to excellent condition, with virtually no wear. Size of the card is very large, and suitable for a small frame, measuring 2.5" wide by 3 3/8" tall. Printed on the reverse side with details of the breed, the series number and breed name. These are not only great breed collectibles and memorabilia or ephemera, they make great gifts, dog show trophies, presents, and look incredible framed on a desk, mantle or wall!! Arthur Wardle (1864 - 1949) was not only the most famous canine illustrator of his time, but also illustrated the most famous breed books and encyclopedias of the day. The volume of Wardle’s paintings reproduced on collectible cigarette cards alone, totaled approximately 250. Most notable, among these were the Players Cigarette 50 full body studies in landscapes from 1929, the series of 25 head studies (two portraits per card) in the 1939, and the 1940's set of 50 head studies later re-printed in 1993. At least 80 additional paintings and watercolors were reproduced on postcards, and Spratts produced 36 of his images on cards. This Auction is for ONE card, Otterhound or Otter Hound ONLY!! Good: Some damage or soiling, includes corner damage, damage from adhesive backs, grubby backs. Fair: Card may be damaged by creases, folds, crack or dirty mark.
