Torney later sang with the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company, appearing in 1943 at London's Winter Garden Theatre in La Traviatta (Alfred Germont), Madame Butterfly (Lieutenant Pinkerton), Rigoletto (Duke of Mantua), La Boheme (Rudolph), Faust (Faust), and The Merry Wives of Windsor (Fenton).Commenting on a performance of “The Mikado” given by Bangor Operatic Society at the Dufferin Hall in 1928 the Belfast News-Letter observed that the Society had been fortunate in securing for the part of Nanki-Poo the “brilliant young tenor” Mr John Torney, continuing: “The quality and exceptional range of his voice was evident in all his numbers. A noteworthy success was A Wandering Minstrel I in which the singer realised the extreme possibilities of artistic expression inherent in the beautiful melody.” Meanwhile, Mr Torney’s inclusion in the quintet The Flowers That Bloom In Spring added to “the fine effect of this favourite number”. At that time it was also noted that Mr Torney was due to travel to the Continent to pursue further musical training, which “no doubt,” wrote the reviewer, “would lead to a promising artistic career for Mr Torney … with a little more experience of dramatic work and more confidence, Mr Torney, we feel sure will be an undoubted acquisition to the operatic stage.”On November 4, 1932 he sang in the Victoria Hall, Larne, Co. Antrim and was described as a “promising Belfast tenor” and “rising young tenor”. He got a lengthy write-up in the Belfast News-Letter (March 8) for his March 7, 1933 evening recital in the Ulster Hall, Belfast at which he sang songs by Beethoven, Schubert, Puccini, Giordano and selected Irish songs – plus “Come in the Garden, Maud”. He was described as “one of Ireland’s leading tenors”. He got a rave review for his week-long engagement at the Belfast Empire Theatre in January 1934, topping an all-star variety show. By May 1935, Northern-Irish tenor John Torney had become a full-time tenor chorister touring with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company – a position he retained until February 1936 when a solo career in opera began to open up for him.John Torney as Pinkerton (right) takes his curtain call after “Madama Butterfly” at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin in Spring 1943 with Sydney Russell (Producer), Patricia Black (Suzuki), Jim Doyle (Conductor) and May Devitt (Cio-Cio San)Between 1937 and 1943 he appeared regularly with the Carl Rosa Opera Company both touring in the provinces and at London’s Winter Garden Theatre in a wide variety of repertoire including Turridu in “Cavalleria Rusticana” (1937 and 1940) the title role in Faust (1937 and 1943), Alfred in “Die Fledermaus” (1937), the Duke of Mantua in “Rigoletto” (1938 and 1944), Walther von Der Vogelweide in “Tannhauser” (1938), Sandor Barinkay in “The Gipsy Baron” (1938 and 1939), Alfredo Germont in “La Traviata” (1939 and 1944), Gustavus III in “A Masked Ball” (1939), Pinkerton in “Madam Butterfly” (1941 and 1944), Rodolfo in “La Boheme” (1943 and 1944) and Fenton in “The Merry Wives Of Windsor” (1943). The “Radio Times” notes that he appeared in a number of live broadcasts during the later 1930s but we’re guessing that it is doubtful that any of these have survived (…but you never know… check out his minor contribution to a broadcast concert from 1937 below).Torney appeared just once with the Dublin Operatic Society (as Pinkerton in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” in Autumn 1940), and then over a short but productive period between 1941 and 1943, Torney sang a wide variety of roles with the DGOS. 1949 found him on tour with the Imperial Opera Company (see Vere Laurie), notably as Faust in Gounod’s opera and as Turridu (“Cavalleria Rusticana”). Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
