San Francisco, California: The oldest adobe building in San Francisco is the Commandante's Headquarters, located within the walls of the United States Government Presidio. It is the only surviving landmark of Spanish rule, built in 1776. It was in this historic structure that Dona Maria Conception Arguello was won by the Gallant Count Rezanov, Chamberlain of the Russian Czar. For many years it has been the officers' club at the Presidio. recently the venerable building was remodeled so cleverly that the old and the new merge into an an artistic realism. The new ballroom is spacious, and recalls the many gala occasions when Spanish grandee and son courted lovely senoritas. The old garden with its ancient trees and flower beds has not been disturbed in the reconstructions. One of the interesting things inside the newly-remodeled officers' club is a papier mache, life-like figure of President Abraham Lincoln. Resembling a work of bronze, the light-weight model attracts attention.
