Description: The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1924. First edition, first impression. Sized 19 x 13 cm. Pp. [vi]; 310; [2], advertisements. Lacking its original dust wrapper, but supplied with a facsimile dust jacket. Significant wear to boards and spine, with some areas of minor marking and scratching, and light bumping and wear to corners. Some foxing and tanning to edges, prelims and some throughout, although mostly contained to extremities. Binding nice and square, with pages very tightly bound. Professionally restored by the Abbey Bindery, with pages resewn by hand using the finest linen thread, given new endpapers (but the original fly-leaves have been kept and incorporated within the binding). Re-backed with new cloth, saving the original boards and superimposing the original spine. Pencilled inscription to FFEP. Contents are largely clean and unblemished throughout (with a few odd blemishes here and there, not affecting text), pages are tanned with age, with two larger stains to pages 73 and 216, some very light chipping to a handful of edges and only a small, thumb-sized loss to the corner of page 121 (far from affecting text). Otherwise, only the odd shallow earmark, foxing spot or thumb mark. Collated as complete, with the correct adverts to the rear. Supplied with a facsimile of the original dust jacket, protected in a clear archival-grade sleeve. A rare opportunity to acquire the fourth of Christie's sixty-six original crime novels, and the first to feature the secret service agent Colonel Race. The story follows the adventures of Anne Beddingfeld, a young woman who witnesses a man's mysterious death at a London tube station. Intrigued by the incident, Anne decides to investigate and finds herself embroiled in a complex web of intrigue, murder, and international conspiracy. As she travels to South Africa, she encounters a cast of eccentric characters, including the titular "Man in the Brown Suit". The novel combines elements of romance, adventure, and suspense, typical of Christie's signature style.
