Description: 1922 Neilson's Chocolate V61 baseball, Frank Parkinson, Philadelphia - SGC 1 On the Set - The 1922 V61 Neilson’s Chocolate collection stands out as a popular choice among Canadian candy card enthusiasts. Comprising 120 cards sized at 2” by 3-1/2”, this set was originally distributed with Canada’s Neilson’s “Big League” Chocolate Bars. Each card showcases player portraits encased within a centered oval, adorned with ornate borders, and features the player’s name, position, and team at the bottom. There are two distinct variations within the V61 series. The Type 1 variant includes card numbers on the front and employs a larger, calligraphic font for the word ‘Neilson’s’ on the reverse. Conversely, Type 2 cards omit card numbers and feature the word ‘Neilson’s’ in capital letters on the back. Due to the utilization of thin stock in production, surviving examples of the 1922 Neilson’s Chocolate cards often exhibit less than pristine condition. William Neilson (1844-1915) pioneered Neilson’s Chocolate bars. Initially renowned for his expertise in ice cream production, Neilson ventured into chocolate manufacturing at his Toronto facility in 1906. This expansion served the purpose of utilizing his skilled ice cream artisans during the winter lulls. By 1914, Neilson’s had scaled its chocolate production to over 500,000 pounds annually. Following William Neilson's passing in 1915, his son Morden assumed leadership of the family enterprise.On the Player - Frank Joseph "Parky" Parkinson (1895-1960) was one of nine children, including seven sons and two daughters, born to Polish immigrants. By the age of 15, he left school and started working as a laborer in a car shop. In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, Parkinson enlisted in the Army and served for two years. After the war, he turned to baseball and made his way to the Major Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played from 1921 to 1924. Following his time with the Phillies, Parkinson spent several years in the minor leagues until a knee injury ended his baseball career in 1929.
