This book is beautifully illustrated by esteemed artist Jessie Willcox Smith – with 10 full-page color plates (all present) and interspersed color drawings. This is a first edition thus – and first issue of this edition, with top gilt edges and color drawings (the later printings had black and white drawings and lacked the gilt top edge). Additionally, it’s rare to find this book in its original jacket. Though the jacket has wear (please see the full condition and photos), the book is in relatively nice condition overall, with flaws noted in the condition description. The beloved, Swiss story of Heidi was originally published in 1880. Condition: The jacket has wear – with scuffing, chipping, tearing, and staining; please see the photos for the most accurate description. The actual book has some light staining to the covers, gently bumped and worn spine edges, and a small dent to the top front cover. Three of the corners are lightly bumped, with a more notable bump to the fourth on the back - some wear to corner tips. Some age wear / darkening to top gilt edge, and light staining to other outer edges. The ffep has a blank bookplate. A back endpage has a small series of stamped numbers at the top followed by a pencil notation. One of the most notable flaws is that the first 20 or so pages have wrinkling / creasing down the page. A small section of pages have a small stain in the bottom margin. There may be an occasional small spot or stain, but overall, the pages are quite clean. Mild tanning to the pages. The binding has some light laxity, front and back, but is not split or cracked, and the pages are soundly holding.
