Gilt lettering is rubbed on some front boards & spines, but all are legible. All text-blocks are lightly toned, some exhibit light foxing and finger-soiling. The Bloomingdale Insane Asylum (1821-1889) was an American private hospital for the care of the mentally ill, founded by New York Hospital. In 1872, the NY journalist, Julius Chambers, conducted an undercover investigation of the institution by having himself committed with the help of his senior editor and some of his friends. After 10 days, he was released & wrote a series of articles for the NY Tribune exposing abuses of inmates. The Boston Psychopathic Hospital was one of the first mental health hospitals in Massachusetts. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Weill Cornell Medical Center, previously known as New York Hospital or Old New York Hospital, is a research hospital in NYC. The hospital was founded in 1771 with a charter from George III. St. Elizabeths Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Southeast Washington D.C. operated by the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health.
