Description: This is an original print, one of ten we have listed, from a disbound copy of Arthur Quiller-Couch's In Powder and Crinoline, printed in 1913 Each of the colour tipped in plates is mounted on thick grey art paper with decorated borders, under captioned tissue guards. (Whoever disbound the book has done so carefully, so the pages offered here could be used to repair an existing book lacking the corresponding page.) This was the Danish artist Kay Rasmus Nielsen's first commission, remaining one of the most beautiful books to come out of the "Golden Age" of book illustration. The colours are bright, there are no marks nor creases, no foxing. As a child Nielsen's artistic talent blossomed when he began drawing the fantastical scenes he imagined as he read the sagas of the northern countries. Nielsen's work was influenced in a major way by three factors: The oriental art that his grandfather brought back from his trips to China; The artistic style of Aubrey Beardsley particularly his floral style and elongated figures; The Art Nouveau movement which was popular between 1890 and 1910. The 'Golden Age of Illustration' from the 1880's to the 1920's was a period of unprecedented excellence in book and magazine illustration. It developed from advances in technology permitting accurate and inexpensive reproduction of art using four colours rathe4 than three, combined with a voracious public demand for new graphic art. Allthough less well-known, Kay Nielsen standing ranks alongside Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac as one of the leading lights in this Golden Age of Illustration.
