Description: Homes of Character is a fascinating look at the process of owning and taking care of a home at the turn of the last century. A time of great energy, when the 19th turned to the 20th century, the desire for new and modern bloomed. John Henry Newsom, an architect from Cleveland Ohio, took advantage of this desire and had this published as a way to push his services and to encourage the use of the “best” materials. With a variety of articles inside from authorities in the Cleveland area, the text covers topics from Owning a home, to roofing, plumbing, electricity...all are included along with a big push for use of experts, another fascination of the era. Some of these, besides Newsom, are Stanley L McMichael, secretary of the Cleveland Realtors’ Association, E. G. Gilbert, W. R. Creer, Pine Lumber, and others whose businesses and products are advertised in the back of the book. There is also a section in the back to order materials and plans from Newsom along with areas for sketches and other necessities of home ownership. Lots of in-text illustrations of suggestions for furnishings and products for improvement along with a few color plates inside from the National Lead Co. on paint as a medium for Interior Decoration. Lots of ads in the back from such diverse companies as Kohler Plumbing products, Dutch Boy Paints (“Pure White Lead”).A cross between “wish book” and home magazine, this would have been the aspirational way to design and own a house. The text is good; this volume has very few issues;minor scuffing at the head and tail of the spine, some very light foxing along with toning to the paper from age. Definitely an interesting and important look at the Home Buying experience. Don’t hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures.
