The Reason Why (1911)PLOT:Pedro takes a fresh shave and Hank shines his boots as they were never polished before, because, as may be supposed, there is a woman in the case. The two old partners are rivals for the affections of Marie, a pretty store keeper, and one is ever trying to steal a march on the other. Pedro steals off to the store and buys a pipe, no less than the fortieth one, some excuse being necessary. Hank enters and buys tobacco, although he has enough to last for years. Each day this continues, and each partner believes he has made wonderful progress toward winning the coveted hand. A chance for one to outdo the other is never let go by, and on one occasion Hank thought he saw the chance of a lifetime. Two "drunks" have passed him, taking the direction of the store, and Hank fears for Marie. He follows their course and when they have entered the store, rushes in. But drunken strength is too much for Hank, and before long they have him powerless on the floor and were it not for the arrival of Pedro, who knows what would have happened? The latter throws them off, and, with Hank's assistance, out of the store. Marie thanks Pedro immensely, and he believes his day has come, but alas! she turns and does the same to Hank. And at that moment, to make the disappointment more complete, a young Easterner arrives, whom Marie receives with open arms; and when he produces the sparkling ring, they know that, as far as they're concerned, love's labor has been lost. So home to the old shanty, where each invites the other to use the shoe leather freely. But anyway, pipes and tobacco offer splendid consolation. 2. Gaston Méliès (February 12, 1852 – April 9, 1915) was a French film director who worked primarily in the United States. He was the brother of the film director Georges Méliès. Georges Méliès had produced films in France, which had become popular around the world. Some distributors began infringing Méliès work, especially in the United States. Georges Méliès asked his brother Gaston to go the United States and guard Georges's copyrights. Gaston Méliès arrived in New York City in 1902, formed the American branch of the Star Film Company, and began distributing his brother's films. By 1903, Gaston began making films himself, mostly documentaries. The films were not successful. In need of warmer winters to allow for year-round film production, Méliès moved the Star Film Company to San Antonio, Texas, and leased twenty acres including a two-story house and large barn that became the "Star Film Ranch" movie studio. In April, 1911, Gaston moved the company to Santa Paula, California, following the trend of other movie studios to relocate in California, where this film was made. 3. William Clifford (1878 – December 23, 1941) was an American actor and screenwriter of the silent era. He appeared in 170 films between 1910 and 1929. He also wrote for 30 films between 1913 and 1919.Clifford was born in New Orleans in 1878, and he was educated in voice and music in Toronto, Canada.Early in his career, Clifford acted on stage as a supporting player for 18 years before he formed his own repertory company that toured the United States. He also was the leading man in Earnest Shipman's Prisoner of Zenda company.
