The Bergschrund is the crevice between the flowing ice of a glacier and the non-flowing ice that is frozen to the rock. Above the bergschrund, the mass of ice and firn is not yet sufficient for it to start flowing under its own weight. Such a bergschrund can form beneath ridges and walls protruding from a glacier.
