First, Harry Hyland discovered Hobey Baker, the first American inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and the second toughest 20th Century hockey autograph. Second, Harry Hyland led the Montreal Wanderers to the Stanley Cup in 1910--the same year this original photograph was taken. The photo was also used to create Hyland's 1910 C56 Imperial Tobacco hockey card. Third, Harry Hyland is the great, great, great-grandfather of iconic superstar, Sidney Crosby.To the best of our knowledge, this is the only original 1910 photo used for the C56 set that still exists. This cabinet was purchased in auction in 2006 after it was consigned by the family of Harry Hyland. Directly below the picture, Harry Hyland signed his name in black fountain pen and dated the image as being from 1910. According to the Harry Hyland family, the cabinet was signed in 1967, only five years after Harry Hyland was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. We believe that Imperial Tobacco presented each of the 34 players in the C56 ice hockey series with a complete set of cards plus the photo or photos that were used to create the first hockey card set. The Harry Hyland card is long gone but the family kept the photo and adhered it to a cabinet backing in 1962, immediately after Harry Hyland became a Hall of Fame member.
