'The Paston Letters' is a collection of correspondence between members of the Paston family of Norfolk gentry and others connected with them in England between the years 1422 and 1509.The letters are noted for their insightful information about life in England during the early Tudor period and as documentation of the shift to Early Modern English.This edition of the works was edited by James Gairdner, who published over four hundred previously unpublished letters in these volumes. He also includes notes, an index and introductions to each volume, containing a survey of the reign of King Henry VI. With a frontispiece to each volume. CONDITION Uniformly bound in the original quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. With leather title labels to the spines. Externally, smart. With light rubbing and bumping to the extremities, heaviest to the spine heads and tails. With marks to the extremities and slight fading to the spine title labels. A couple chips to the spine label of supplement volume. Bookplate of one 'J. H. E. S' to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to the endpapers and the odd spot. Owner's neat contemporary ink inscriptions to the front pastedowns of Volume I and Supplement.
