Description: 1910-11 Turkey Red (T9) - #73 Al Kaufman, Checklist Back - SGC Authentic On the Set - The Turkey Red Cabinets Set, also known as T3 and T9, was manufactured in 1910 and 1911 under the banner of the American Tobacco Company. This set comprises 100 cards or cabinets, crafted on sturdy cardstock, and they boast impressive dimensions, measuring a substantial 5 3/4" x 8". Each of these cards showcases a vibrant full-color lithograph set against a thick grey border, with the subject's name and team (if applicable) presented in a bottom banner. The T3 Turkey Red cabinets spotlighting baseball players are sequentially numbered from #1 to #50 and from #77 to #126. Card numbers 51 to 76 are dedicated to featuring pictures of boxers and form a distinct T9 set. These cabinet cards were exclusively designed for favored tobacco customers and were obtainable as premium rewards in exchange for coupons from three different cigarette brands: Turkey Red, Old Mill, or Fez Cigarettes. Many collectors consider the Turkey Red cards as one of the most aesthetically captivating sports card series ever created. On the Subject and Grade - Al Kaufman (1886-1957) was an American heavyweight boxer and film actor hailing from North Dakota. Standing at 6′1″, this German-American athlete competed in the heavyweight division, vying for the title during Jack Johnson's reign as the world heavyweight champion. Kaufman, based in his hometown of San Francisco, California, fought in the weight range of 185 to 205 lbs. His boxing career spanned from 1905 to 1915, showcasing his muscular build and a cautious yet powerful fighting style. In 1909, Kaufman faced Johnson for the world heavyweight title in San Francisco, with the match going the distance and Johnson ultimately securing the victory through decision. SGC graded this card as authentic, but did not assign a technical grade as the card did not meet their minimum size requirements. There is no evidence of any alterations or card trimming. The card is very attractive, especially for a Turkey Red offering. However, the official size of the Turkey Red cards is 5 3/4" x 8", and this card measures 5 3/4" x 7 15/16", versus 8". In the early 1900s card manufacturing was not as exact as today, and many cards did not meet the size standards, either as too large or too small. Other grading companies may have assigned a grade for this card, but I respect SGC for their high quality standards..
