Description: 1909-1911 T206 Piedmont 150 - Christy Mathewson White Cap, Hall of Fame, New York Giants - GAI 1 On the Player - Christopher Mathewson (1880-1925), known as “the Christian Gentleman,” was a right-handed pitcher for the New York Giants (1900–1916) and the Cincinnati Reds (1916). Standing 6'1", he was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history and ranks among the all-time top 10 in several key pitching categories, including wins, shutouts, and earned run average. In 1936, Mathewson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its first five members, alongside Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Honus Wagner, making him the only posthumous inductee among them. His career accomplishments include being a 2× World Series champion (1905, 1921), a 2× Triple Crown winner (1905, 1908), a 4× NL wins leader (1905, 1907, 1908, 1910), a 5× NL ERA leader (1905, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1913), and a 5× NL strikeout leader (1903–1905, 1907, 1908). He also pitched two no-hitters and was one of the most popular players of his era. Late in the 1918 season, Mathewson volunteered to serve in the United States Army during World War I, serving overseas as a captain in the newly formed Chemical Service alongside Ty Cobb. While in France, he was accidentally exposed to chemical gas during a training exercise, which led to the development of tuberculosis, a disease that claimed his life in 1925 at the age of 45.
