About author, Matthew W. Dalton's Missionary Work Among the Indians by John Alma Dalton, son of Mathew William DaltonMissions among the Indians included one in Mexico and the first one in North Carolina, beginning in 1869 and ending in 1870. In 1875, my father was called to teach the Indians in Malad County how to farm, and I, John Alma Dalton, joined as a missionary. My father sent me with two yoke of oxen, a plow, and a saddle pony. We succeeded, and the Indians became excellent members of the community. At that time, they lived in tents, and we needed to teach them how to build houses. The biggest challenge was obtaining lumber. My father offered to provide lumber for all missionaries from Willard and to build a house free of charge for Bishop John, an Indian, which he did. This was the first house built on our Indian mission. In the spring of 1866, my father embarked on his second mission to the Kiowa tribes in the Indian Territory, accompanied by Brother John Hubbard of Willard. This was the first attempt to preach to the Lamanites in the Indian Territory, working among the Creek, Cherokee, and Kiowa tribes. Despite significant opposition, they found great joy in their work. Unfortunately, my father experienced the sudden death of his companion, Brother John Hubbard. He returned from this mission in 1877. In 1877, my father was called on his third mission among the Indians, assisting Apostle George Teasdale in laboring among the Cherokees in what is now Oklahoma. He had many interesting experiences and developed a deep love for the Indian people. One notable event involved an Indian boy, the son of Chief Timbimbo, who was sold in Willard for a goat and a sack of flour by his uncle. The buyer, Solomon Warner, later sold the boy to his brother, Amos Warner, for a horse. The boy, named Frank Warner, was intelligent and received his education at the Willard Public School. He lived next door to us, and my father took a great interest in him. Frank never forgot my father's kindness, married a white girl, became a faithful member of the church, and was called to fill a mission to the Northwestern States. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
