Vol 2: Ernst Haeckel, Carl von Linnaeus, Thomas Huxley, John Tyndall, Alfred Russel Wallace and John Fiske. Set of two hardcovers, bound in three-quarters leather and marbled boards, with gilt trim. Matching endpapers. Gilt titles, vignette illustration, dates and four raised bands on the spines. Frontispiece portraits and portrait of each scientist at the beginning of the respective chapter - 12 in all. Handsome color title page and similar color bands at the beginning of each chapter -- all by Roycroft designers, plus black and white decorative initial caps. Each volume has an attached ribbon bookmark. Handmade deckle-edged paper. Very handsome set, in original velvet-lined box, with affixed paper title. Books are in fine condition, box is very good, with some wear at hinge and edges, top left corner of flap is split. Rare in this edition.
