May 21 1905' - from Sydney Cockerell to Jane Duncan.Sydney Cockerell was a museum curator and director, heading the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge for almost three decades. A mainstay of society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, being the private secretary of William Morris, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, and Thomas Hardy's executor. He was a friend of Margaret Sackville, with letters between the two being found in their collections after their deaths. He was also a friend and correspondent of the author's cousin, Vita Sackville-West.'A Hymn to Dionysus' consists of fifteen poems by Lady Margaret Sackville, the second cousin of Bloomsbury author Vita Sackville-West. This is an early publication by her, published when she was twenty-four years old. Margaret was a protegee of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, a friend of Sydney Cockerell, writing poetry from a young age. Her poems were published in 'The English Review', 'Country Life', 'The Spectator', and more. During the First World War Margaret was part of the anti-war Union of Democratic Control.She had a passionate fifteen year affair with Ramsay MacDonald, who was also connected to Cockerell. CONDITION In the original publisher's quarter paper vellum binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with discolouration to the spine and to the extremities of the boards, with some light spots, a little heavier to the front board. Endpapers are age-toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only a few scattered spots.
