Description: Rare evidence & seemingly unpublished in archives. Vardo caravan circled around what appears to be a trade cart. Endless empty livestock pens suggest that the police who hold spectators back intentionally corralled the travellers into this unused venue to control the event. Lizzie, the author of message reverse and sender of the postcard, is marked w/ an inoffensive black X over her dress in the photograph. Fine definition, contrast and detail in a way that few images attain. Decoratively titled German Gipsies Camping & signed J.W. Houlker in pen. Amateur emulsion lines show at edges (please see scan) w/ trivial edge flakes. Has been postally sent from Clitheroe. Accompanying portrait is captioned German Gypsys at Loughborough. Tone & pen differ from the first, but are no doubt related. Both date to the first decade of the 1900s and the two towns only 125 miles apart. One member of the same family likely collected both. The naming here of German Gypsy may be a misnomer ascribed by the viewer misunderstanding the travellers dialect or identify the group as Sinti, a German subgroup of Romani. Emulsion flake that shows in the scrub grass & stub to bottom right corner. Very minimal edge & corner wear beyond.
