It measures approximately 7" x 3-1/2" (≈18 cm. X 8.5 cm.), and the dual photos are sepia, of course. The hike at Watkins Glen Gorge is considered by some to be the "Prettiest Mile in America." It was a favorite tourist destination for many affluent New Englanders in the early 1900s. While the Gorge Trail is only a mile and a half long, visitors were rewarded with 19 waterfalls and a stunningly beautiful rocky terrain that rises up to 200′ above the floor of the gorge. This stereoview is in excellent condition. You might think it had never been used, except that there is a tiny bit of wear on the corners. But the edges and the photos' surface are very pristine. He experimented with stereography and issued a set of stereoscopic images of White House. In the 1880s he collaborated with Elmer and Bert Underwood, who built the company Underwood & Underwood, which became a national distributor of stereoviews. Jarvis produced for the Underwood brothers multiple stereoscopic images of the United States and scenes from countries around the world.Although the research into 3D viewers and photos started back in the first part of the 1800's, the real heyday of the "modern" stereoview started when stereo-cameras became readily available to professional and amateur photographers in the late 1800's. And their popularity continued to the middle of the 1900's.
