L'Histoire Contemporaine were first published as a series in the Revue de Paris, Echo de Paris, and Figaro. The work is essentially a philosophical dialogue set in a small French university town, and presents strong anticlerical themes. Written by nineteenth and twentieth-century French poet and winner of the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature, Anatole France. This is the seventh edition of this work, published the same year as the first edition (1899). Rebound in quarter morocco binding by Birdsall & Son. CONDITION In quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the joints and extremities. Front joint is starting, and front board may detach with further handling. Internally, hinges are starting, particularly the front joint. Otherwise, remaining binding is firm. Spotting to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Pages are age-toned to the extremities, which are otherwise generally bright and clean.
