Interestingly Shakespeare is spelled as “Shakspeare” both on the cover and inside this book. Apparently, during William Shakespeare’s lifetime, his last name was spelled in more than 80 different ways and William himself, never spelled his name as “William Shakespeare”. My research has revealed that it was actually relatively commonplace for books and plays to spell his last name as “Shakspeare”. Published by C. J. This book is a reprint of 1898, from the same year as the first edition. The Pitt Press series first launched in 1874. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) and Mary Lamb (1764-1847) were a brother and sister duo who made significant contributions to English literature. They are best known for their collaborative work, particularly the collection of essays titled "Tales from Shakespeare." There is no dust jacket. The green cloth bound boards are intact, robust, and in a good state for a book which is 125 years old. There is just a little wear, more-so to the edges and corners, light fading, especially to the spine, soft bumping to the corners, light creases, and only very small marks. There is black lettering on the front board and spine and a small black crest on the front. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, with darker tanning on the last page of text. This is consistent for a book of this age. There is foxing on the pastedowns and endpapers. Besides this, the pages are in an overall neat and clean condition, with just the occasional small mark and the very occasional small fold or light crease. Many pages have small rips to their inner edge, at the bottom or the top, and a couple of further pages have small rips to their outer edge. This does not affect the text. On the front free endpaper there is some pen and pencil, as well as an ink stamp for “METCALF, CHESTNUT HOUSE”. There are a few further pages throughout the book which have the same ink stamp on them, and a few pages with remnants of pencil on them. There is also a small ink blot on page 108. In respect of all the above, the text is still readable. Between a handful of pages are light cracks in the gutter. Pages 147 to 154 are partially loose to just one side, and so still attached within the book, and secure. There are no missing pages and so all 154 pages are present, plus 8 pages to the rear containing the publisher’s catalogue, and the introduction and preface at the start. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. Please note that this is a small book and measures approximately 17.1 cm by 11.6 cm and 1.1 cm wide. It weighs approximately 178 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
