The copyright was renewed in 1897 by Rebecca Clarke. Clarke's nieces were the inspiration for her characters: Prudy, Susy, and Dotty Dimple. A gift inscription on the second blank front endpaper is dated Dec. 25,1897.. There are six black and white illustration plates and an illustrated title page, as called for. At the back of the book is a 22 page illustrated publisher’s catalog of “Sophie May” books. From Wikipedia: Rebecca Sophia Clarke (February 22, 1833 – August 10, 1906), also known as Sophie May, was an American author of children's fiction. Using her nieces and nephews as inspiration, she wrote realistic stories about children. Between 1860 and 1903, she wrote 45 books, the most popular being the Little Prudy series. The blue cloth hardcover is clean and shows average wear at the corners and spine ends. The spine is a little darkened. There is a gift inscription on the second front endpaper. The interior is otherwise excellent with no names, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is somewhat (about average) toned with age.
