Description: Here's a 1.5" mechanical device made for the 1896 presidential election promoting republicans William McKinley and Garrett Hobart. Back then the biggest debate was over this country's monetary system; should our be currency be based on gold - what republicans backed or silver, backed by democrats? A Gold Eagle was a coin during the day, so some genius devised this gold-colored "Broken Eagle" which, when the loop at the top was pushed down, made the nation's mascot bend over and seem pitiful. The proud bird display's McKinley and a dollar worth 100 cents. The broken bird names William Jennings Bryan and his running-mate, Arthur Sewall and a dollar will be worth half that if they're elected. We won't go into the story of how badly the folks on Antiques Roadshow blew it when they estimated the value of one of these items on air, but we bet you techies could find that episode and get a big laugh out of it. Let's just say their "expert" was off by a grand or two. This is in nice condition but please look at our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. The case holding everything together seems a bit loose, so the mechanics slide around a bit. We are simply not expert enough to pinch or crimp anything for fear of damaging the appearance of it. It's 128 years old! But everything is here internally, it works well, and it looks simply fine on the outside-it just isn't TOTALLY TIGHT. Therefore, we've lowed the price on it $10 from the last example we sold. Shipping on it will be $5.50 sent well-protected in a small box with tracking. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. And we'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases even though eBay says we don't. We just give you a refund for any overpayment. 8942
