Description: 1893 Yokohama Yamate Bluff Friedrich Groesser Postal Card 日本寫眞會 RARE This card is postmarked Tokyo, Meiji 26 (1893) and addressed to グロッサー (Groesser) at # 180 Yamate, Yokohama. Interestingly, there is also another address written on the card: # 167 Yamate. While Groesser is known to have lived at # 180, the significance of # 167 remains unclear. The Japan Photographic Society (日本寫眞會, Nihon Shashinkai) was a Tokyo-based organization founded in 1889 by Enomoto Takeaki (榎本武揚, 1836–1908), known for his role in the Boshin War. The society had fifty-six founding members, including 32 Japanese and 24 foreigners. William Sturgis Bigelow was among the prominent members of this organization. The club was one of the earliest and most prominent photographic societies in Japan, bringing together both Japanese and foreign photography enthusiasts who were keen on capturing the rapidly changing landscapes and cultures of Japan. The club included a diverse group of members, ranging from amateur photographers to professional artists, and was instrumental in promoting photography as an art form in Japan. Groesser’s involvement in the club suggests that he had a strong interest in photography, a common hobby among expatriates in Japan at the time, who often documented their experiences and the surrounding environment. Since the club ceased to exist by 1896, documents from it are very difficult to find, especially those concerning the 'gaijin' members. Friedrich Groesser, for example, is listed in Wikipedia.
